Prince Edward Island is a small, close-knit market where reputation decides most jobs. Customers ask neighbours, check Google reviews and look at your listing before they ever open your website. That shifts website support toward accuracy and reputation: correct details everywhere, reviews answered, and no outdated claims, particularly about energy programs, several of which closed in 2026.
The PEI market
Charlottetown and Stratford form the main market, with Summerside the second centre and Three Rivers and Cornwall growing communities. Many trades businesses serve most of the Island from one base.
On PEI, fewer companies compete for each trade, and customers often know someone who has used you. Your Google Business Profile is frequently the first thing they see, so marketing upkeep of hours, photos and review replies often matters more than new website pages. But the website still needs to load, be accurate and make calling easy.
Seasons and timing
Island winters bring plenty of snow and cold, softened somewhat by the surrounding Gulf. Summer also brings a tourism-driven surge in work on cottages and seasonal properties for some trades.
- Heating and heat pump trades: keep sites stable from late fall; update in summer.
- Exterior trades, decks and cottage work: spring and early summer are busy. Use winter for website projects.
- Seasonal-property services: if you open or close cottages, keep those pages and availability current before each season.
Regulators and licences
PEI's Inspection Services covers boilers and pressure vessels, electrical, elevators, plumbing and propane. Plumbing companies need a provincial plumbing contractor's licence, boiler and pressure vessel work requires a mechanical contractor licence (the current three-year cycle ends December 31, 2027), and people servicing propane appliances need an LP gas licence.
If your site displays these, we keep them current and linked. The Workers Compensation Board of PEI covers workplace insurance. We don't interpret licensing rules.
Programs your site might mention
PEI programs changed significantly in 2026. As of October 2026:
- The efficiencyPEI free heat pump program, including oil-to-heat-pump support, shows as closed on the official page.
- Residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026. Purchases made in the year before that may still qualify within one year of purchase.
- Under a June 29, 2026 federal agreement, the province is expanding its free insulation program for income-qualified homeowners; current intake details weren't confirmed.
Many PEI heat pump and heating sites were written when generous programs were open. If yours still says "free heat pumps available", it needs updating. Programs change, so link the official page and tell customers to confirm.
Statistics Canada reported that in 2023, heat pumps were the primary heating system for 36% of PEI households and oil for 28%, which is why program references are so common on Island trades sites.
Website problems we see often on PEI
- "Free heat pump" banners. Home page offers written when efficiencyPEI programs were open and never taken down.
- Unanswered reviews. In a small market, a complaint left without a calm reply is read by many future customers.
- Licence details out of date. Contractor licence numbers from a previous cycle, or none at all where customers expect to see one.
- Seasonal pages left up. Cottage opening offers still showing in November.
On an island where people talk, small inaccuracies cost more than they would in a large city. Fixing them is quick, and it protects the reputation your business has built.
How we'd support a PEI trades business
- Program sweep: retire or correct closed efficiencyPEI references, with dates and links.
- Listing and reviews: accurate Google details and replies to recent reviews.
- Licence details: current, linked and consistent across site and listing.
- Ownership audit of accounts; see our audit guide.
- Light monthly maintenance.
PEI is four hours ahead of our Mon–Fri 9–6 Pacific hours, and we usually reply within one business day. Contact us by call, text or email.
Frequently asked questions
Do PEI trades even need much website support?
Less than in big cities, but more than most owners think. On a small island, one wrong detail or an unanswered bad review travels fast, and many sites still promote efficiencyPEI rebates that have closed.
Which efficiencyPEI programs closed?
As of October 2026, the official efficiencyPEI page says its free heat pump program is closed, and residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026, with a one-year window for purchases made in the prior year. Update any page that presents them as open.
Should I display my PEI contractor licence on my site?
Many plumbing and mechanical contractors do, because customers check. We'll display what you give us and keep it current; what's required is a question for PEI's Inspection Services.
